De Korenbloemen Studio Apartment

Historic Central Amsterdam

These are our favorite restaurants in the area.  We are foodies and love to dine out and so we tried to pull together an interesting list to help make your visit to Amsterdam memorable.  We included a range of prices, but all great food quality.

Cafe Stock  Hotel The Exchange, Damrak 50h

Open 7 days a week at 7AM.  Serves breakfast all day long.  A health and locally sourced option for breakfast.  Located in the Hotel The Exchange on the Damrak.

Klaver 4 Utrechtsestraat 69   020 624 28 49

One of our favorites and regular staples for breakfast.  They also serve lunch. Get the spinach and goat cheese quiche - it’s my favorite!

Rembrandt Corner  Jodenbreestraat 2

Next to the Rembrandt house is the place for early birds to have breakfast. Open all days from 8 am (9 am in winter) for breakfast and later for lunch.

Tisfris St Anthoniebreestraat 142

A two minute walk from the apartment: nice local coffee shop for breakfast and lunch. Great food and nice atmosphere. Opens for breakfast daily at 9 am.

De Bakkerswinkel Zeedijk 37

'De Bakkerswinkel' means Bakery Shop and that is what they do. They bake: breads, quiches, scones, cakes, you name it. Treat yourself for lunch or high tea. Reservations are a must.

Coffee and Tea - Wijs en Zonen  Zeedijk 43

Tea and coffee from all over the world in this Amsterdam institution: this shop has been around for over 200 years, ever since 1792.  Besides of course renowned tea, you can enjoy a delicious dutch lunch, an exclusive beer or a delicious supper.  They have a great patio as well.

You are a few blocks from China town, so you should explore the many grocery stores, shoppes and restaurants.

Oriental City - Chinese €€  Oudezijdsvoorburgwal 177  +31206268352

Chinese Restaurant known for dim sum during lunch hours. Crowded, particularly Sunday afternoons! Best is to get in by 11:30, otherwise you may have to wait for quite some time. Or go there on a weekday when it is less crowded.

Nam Kee - Chinese €€

Well known restaurant at the Zeedijk. And one of the best Chinese restaurant in Amsterdam. Known for it’s Peking Duck.  Interior is not great, but food comes out fast.

New King - Chinese €€  Zeedijk 115

Next door to Nam Kee.  Nicer interior with high quality Mandarin style Chinese.  We prefer this to Nam Kee.

Sea Palace - Chinese €€  Oosterdokskade 8 +31 (0)20 62 64 777

The Sea Palace is the first floating restaurant in Europe built in 1984.  It’s architecture is traditional Chinese pagoda-style and this is a landmark in the city center.  The three-story restaurant serves authentic Cantonese cuisine, as well as traditional dim sum, house made by their dim sum chef.

Thai Bird - Snackbar - Thai €  Zeedijk 74, 020 620 1442

Bird has two locations in Amsterdam but their Snackbar is favourite. A Thai snack bar where you get delicious Thai delicacies.  Thai Bird Restaurant is rated #1 Thai in Amsterdam.

Krua Thai Classic Restaurant - Thai €€€  Staalstraat 22 020 622 9533

Love this place and only a few blocks away from DKBN.  Food is amazing and people know it because this place is always crowded.  Reservation is definitely recommended, they do provide take away.

Nyonya - Malaysian

Kloveniersburgwal 38  +31204222447

Best Malay food around at bargain prices. If the menu shows two peppers meaning that the food is spicy, then you better believe them: it is spicy.  Also available for take away.

Sampurna - Indonesian  Singel 498  +31206253264

This is the best Indonesian restaurant in the centre. Famous for their Rijsttafel: colonial heritage mix of all kind of great foods. A real treat. Some dishes might be quite spicy. And I mean: spicy. So ask in advance if you wish to play it low.

Vijaya - Indian  Geldersekade 23  +31204205225

The best Indian restaurant in the Nieuwmarkt area.

Restaurant Lastage €€€  Geldersekade 29 Amsterdam | 020-737-0811

Classically French, but with a Dutch twist and our favorite restaurant in the area and only a short walk past De Waag.  It’s well known with locals and you will need to book in advance.  Try the Epoisses nu in Broiche for dessert.  It’s an absolute favorite!

Kaagman & Kortekaas €€€  Sint Nicolaasstraat 43 Amsterdam | T 020 233 6544

Kaagman & Kortekaas is located on the picturesque Street of St Nicholas in the oldest part of Amsterdam.  It’s menu is inspired by the contemporary bistros of Paris with game, poultry, homemade charcuterie and oysters at the bar.  This won best restaurant of 2015 and it’s only a 15 minute walk from DKBN.

Bord’eau €€€€  Nieuwe Doelenstraat 2-14

Located in the Hotel del Europe, just a few blocks away, is an amazing French restaurant.

Brasserie Klokspijs €€  Hemonystraat 38  020 - 3642560

This is a great local stop for amazing french cuisine that is affordable. One of the first places I ate at when we moved to Amsterdam and the food melted in my mouth!  It’s located in the Pijp and about a 20 minute walk.

Blauw Aan De Wal €€€€  Oudezijds Achterburgwal 99  +31 20 3302257

Located in an old warehouse with a hidden courtyard, there’s this super restaurant - Blauw Aan de Wal.  It is a must for those who really love good and surprising food.  3 or 4 pre-fix menus. Only a 5 minute walk from DKBN and reservations are highly recommended.  Just delicious.

Restaurant Anna €€  Warmoesstraat 111, +31 20 428 1111

A great restaurant in the middle of the Red Light District. Anna stands for high quality food but at a reasonable price. Recommend the tasting menu consisting of eight courses!

Terpentijn €€ Rokin 103

New hotspot near Dam Square with French Asian cuisine.  Awesome interior and has a great burger and cocktails.  Don’t miss it!

Guts & Glory €€€  Utrechtsestraat 6 +31 20 362 0030

Guts & Glory's menu is centered around a particular animal.  Every three months the animal changes; the theme here is to use all of the animal, no part is spared and this is a no waste way of thinking. But it's not about serving heavy offal dishes, it's very refined, well thought out and delicious.  If you can get in, it’s not to miss!  Located in Rembrandtplein and perfect for foodies.

Cannibale Royale €€  Handboogstraat 17a  020 233 7160

For those that like delicious meats, exotic beers and beautiful wines, Cannibale Royale is a bar where you can eat like a cave man.  Solid enough for a “foodie”, but still has a local, casual feel.  It’s located right in the Kalverstraat shopping area, so only a 7 minute walk.  Try the ribs - they are better than in Texas!

Envy €€€€  Prinsengracht 381 +31 20 344 64 07

Comtemporized version of an old village’s butcher shop. Guests can’t help but notice the spacious open kitchen and the wall with 26 refrigerators that are intended as showcases not only for wines, but also for cheeses, sausages, oysters, jams, chutneys, etc.  The food is amazing and was recently awarded a Michelin Star.  Every Monday night, Head Chef Michael Wolf and his team offer a special tasting menu with 5 typical Envy dishes for € 37.  Reservations are a must for this hot spot.

Dwaze Zaken €  Prins Hendrikkade 50  +31 20 612 41 75

Dwaze Zaken is a café in the centre of Amsterdam. We serve, without exception, great food and tasty drinks for a reasonable price.  Why not let our menu, art, interior and personnel inspire you and help make your stop at our café a unique and unforgettable experience.

Piccolo Mondo  €€ Geldersekade 93  020 35 83 875

A local Italian restaurant and centrally located in the popular Nieuwmarktbuurt in Amsterdam. Near the Central Station, the Dam Square and the famous Red Light District.

Bar Moustache €€  Utrechtsestraat 141 | 1017 VM AMSTERDAM | 020 4281074

One of our favorites; as its open all day for lunch and dinner.  They have great Italian food, pizzas and their specials are always to die for.  They only serve organic wines and their antipasta platter is a great way to try a lot of different items.  You’ll need a reservation on the weekend, as it’s quite the hot spot.

Toscanini €€€ Lindengracht 75

Toscanini opened in 1985 in Jordaan and continues to be the benchmark for Italian cuisine in the Netherlands.  It’s authentic Italian and all vegetables are brought in from Italy and pastas and breads are made in-house.  Always rated as a top restaurant in Amsterdam, reservations are a must and you may need to book them months in advance.

Da Portare Via €  Lange Niezel 16  020-23 55 552

Our favorite pizza - to eat in or for delivery.  Pizzas are Roman style, thin crust and baked in an original Italian wood-fired oven. The intense heat of the wood fire offers tons of flavor.  The tiramisu and chocolate mousse are also household favorites.

Mata-Hara €€  Oudezijds Achterburgwal 22,

In the heart of the red light district, this cozy place is perfect for lunch, coffee, drinks, and dinner seven days a week. Downstairs there are several area’s that give you the feeling that you’re at home! Huge couches and comfy chairs, a cappuccino, free wifi and a newspaper and that’s all you need.  The menu at Mata Hari is inspired by Italian flavours and is very reasonable priced. The antipasti is delicious to share! I can recommend the ravioli, but I must admit I’m a fan of almost all ravioli dishes.  After dinner it’s fun to stay for drinks.

Van Dobben €  Korte Reguliersdwarsstraat 5

Go here for a very traditional Dutch style sandwich. Try their famous ‘kroket!’ That’s a small fried roll with meat ragout, covered in breadcrumbs and then deep-fried, making the outside crunchy. Nice atmosphere, great when you are in a hurry. Take out is referred to as ‘Export.’

Engelbewaarder €€  Kloveniersburgwal 59  +31206253772

A few houses down from the Korenbloemen apartment. Best choice in the neighborhood with jazz sessions on late Sunday afternoons. Highly recommended for a tasty meal, too. The Engelbewaarders has a terrace on the canal in summer. By now many people have discovered the excellent value for money, so you may need to make reservations for dinner.  They have live Jazz every Sunday at 4:30PM.

Hemelse Modder €€€  Oude Waal 9  +31206243203

All fresh foods organically grown in the vicinity of the city. French inspired and serving traditional Dutch dishes as well. The restaurant has been there for ages and in the many times we have been here over the years, it has always been tasty, pleasant and relaxed.

Vlaams Friteshuis € Voetboogstraat 31

Near Heiligeweg – the best French fries in Holland. Actually in Holland we think the best fries come from Belgium (Flanders, hence: Vlaamse Frieten). The fries are eaten as a snack by the Dutch, served with a wide choice of sauces.

Café-restaurant Stork €€€€ (North)  business park ‘De Overkant’ Gedempt Hamerkanaal 201

Take the IJpleinveer ferry from north of Central Station to Stork, the best place in town for great seafood with an enormous terrace with a view on the passing boats and ships.  It is situated in an old industrial loft at bussinespark De Overkant, the former Stork factory, at the northern banks of the river IJ.  It’s about a 45 minute trip one way from DKBN, but definitely worth the distance!

Gerrit van Beeren €€  Koningsstraat 54  +31206222329

A classic and local Dutch ‘eetcafe’, meaning a cafe where you can eat. A bit like the English pubs. In summer dinner is served in the courtyard.  Very traditional dutch food.

Amsterdamsche Vischhandel (Fish)  Zeedijk 129

Since 1938 on Zeedijk. Try their fresh ‘haring’ (raw, salted herring), it is one of the best in town. And enjoy the classical music in the shop while doing so! Another Dutch classic is smoked mackerel, usually eaten on white bread.
